NYSUT REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY
The New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), our State-wide affiliate, held its annual Representative Assembly (or “RA”) in Manhattan from May 3-5. Two of our elected delegates from the WCCFT, Jim Werner and Carol Browne, were in attendance. As described on NYSUT’s website, “the RA is the union’s highest policy-making body,” where “delegates may debate and vote on proposed amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws, proposed resolutions and other business.” As always, this year’s RA featured many prominent and energizing speakers, including U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, NY Governor Kathy Hochul, NY Attorney General Letitia James, and AFT President Randi Weingarten. The delegates discussed and voted on a wide range of resolutions; most relevant to public higher education were those on monitoring community college trustee boards, saving SUNY Downstate Hospital, and reaffirming the need for affirmative action in college admissions.
